WHO WE ARE

French cooperation in Brazil

The Franco-Brazilian partnership encompasses many areas but focuses on a protocol on sustainable development in Amazonia signed in 2009. Broader topics involve fighting climate change and food security.

In the Amazon, CIRAD and the IRD were developed together with Brazilian research institutions over thirty years ago to work on a number of topics: climate and environmental changes, societal adaptations, sustainable management of farming, cattle raising and forestry, biodiversity, family farming and agro-ecology, among others. In order to make these partnerships sustainable, multi-institutional research platforms were created: the Dispositivo em Parceria Amazônia [Amazon Partnership Device] (CIRAD, EMBRAPA, UFPA and UFRA) and the LMI OCE Observatório das Mudanças Ambientais [Environmental Change Observatory] (IRD and UNB). They became the Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia Odisseia [Odyssey National Institute of Science and Technology], run by UNB with over 15 member institutions. Today, these institutions are working together to develop an approach for Territorial Accompaniment in Amazonia.
